New Banjo

Hi all I have been a tad busy I am replacing a banjo that will be going bush in a very short while. Some 15 odd years ago I worked an area on the Shoalhaven that gave me wonderful gold and it is now time for a rework of that area. But it is a 3 km walk and everything must be taken in. So I have an old Banjo at home that is nearing the end of its days so it will be a one way trip for it. Here is what I have been up to.

Photo 1

This shows the bottom hopper 700cm long 20 wide with the water break and the top hopper 550cm long 19 cm wide at the bottom.

This is the build so far the whole unit is 1 mm out of square which I am very happy with, there are no twist in the top hopper nor the bottom hopper. Both these point must be looked at if you are buying a readymade Banker Twist in the hoppers will throw your water one way or the other and make the wash run to one side or the other.  That is why look before you buy. As I do more I will add to this. Cheers James

Yep the build is going well, the unit will end up been 7 kg all up. And yep it will get the paint job. I seal all my joints with a building grade adhesive. Why I do this is to stop fine sand getting into the joints and it works well at doing just that. I have been unable to get the matting i usually use so i have gone back to the miners moss which i am not fussed on but it will do the job until i come across the type of mat i need.

The gold tray just lifts out at any stage of operation and replaced at any time without having shut down time. 90% of all gold in the unit is placed in that tray therefor when testing poor areas the tray comes in very handy. cheers I picked up a bit today which is good but i have to reline the second last riffle it is out on one side bugger. Don't think you can get the old type anymore, I fix that with 120grit on an orbital sander.

The first photo shows the top hopper adjustment supports. Adjustment holes are set at ½ inch spacing.

New Banjo 111

This photo shows how I am setting up my riffles and matting. Riffles 1.2&3 are placed so no water will blow under the riffle. Riffles numbered 5 water will blow under them. Number  6 shows all the riffle system counter sunk about 4 mil what you cant see is how under each round hole there is a concave of about 3 mil.

What is the benefit or effect of allowing water to blow under a riffle?

If the water blows under the very first and last riffle you will lose a great percentage of your gold. So i have 3 that are enclosed so water cant do that. Having the riffles counter sunk also is a great benefit. Water blowing under a riffle will counter act that riffles effect so why put a riffle there you may ask. The answer would be to slow the wash passing through the unit given time for the sands to separate and the fine gold to settle. If you place riffles over bread crate or the larger expanded mesh the same will happen you got to watch that. thumbs up

Mate if you like I'll look around up here, take a pic of what I find at bunnings, or maybe Masters, then upload it here as I know your phone can't accept pictures.

Does it have to be that hexagonal shape or round do?

How's that?
